Margaret Rowe author of Pretty from the Outside: The Autobiography of Miss England, 1955

Margaret Rowe

Margaret Rowe was born in 1935 in West Norwood, South East London. After an unstable wartime childhood as an evacuee in the Cotswolds, she reunited with her mother in the 1950s and moved to London to pursue her dream of becoming a model.

In 1955, Margaret was crowned Miss England, launching an international modeling career that spanned decades. She graced fashion runways, traveled the glamorous Côte d’Azur, and encountered celebrities including Elizabeth Taylor. Her career took her from London’s high fashion scene to the beaches of Monaco, capturing the transformative spirit of post-war Britain.

Margaret continued modeling until retirement age, living primarily in Highgate, north London. A lifelong dog lover with a particular fondness for dachshunds, she enjoyed long countryside walks and exploring Hampstead Heath.

After retiring from modeling, Margaret moved behind the camera lens, becoming an accomplished nature photographer. Her stunning flower photography won a national competition, earning her a place with Getty Images, where her work continues to be listed today.

Margaret passed away in September 2024, leaving behind this remarkable memoir as her final gift to readers.
