Summary

When Emily Squires finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time, she is transported to the colonies of Australia. Torn from her ailing family and the only life she’s ever known, Emily comes face-to-face with the brutality of the penal system and the harsh reality of life at sea. Yet, in this unlikely place, friendships are forged and Emily begins to harbour the dream of becoming a medic despite the societal barriers that stand in her way. As she arrives in Van Diemen’s Land, Emily’s path intersects with that of the enigmatic Captain Trelawney. In his household, she finds a glimmer of kindness and a chance to heal from the wounds of her past. As their lives become increasingly intertwined, Emily begins to imagine a future she never thought possible.

But when fate takes a sudden turn, Emily must summon the strength to forge ahead alone. Guided by the wisdom of unexpected allies and the resilience of her own spirit, she sets out to carve her own path in a world that seeks to define her by her conviction. Emily faces down injustice and adversity, and navigates the complex social and political landscape of her time with grace, intelligence, and an indomitable spirit. But will she be able to escape the shadows of her past? And could the mysterious connection with Captain Trelawney lead her back to the man who once stirred her heart?
Meticulously researched and vividly told, this unforgettable story is testament to the enduring power of love, the resilience of the human heart, and the transformative force of compassion.
